Willowdale Academy

The school of the Aether-touched, entered through the great willow itself. What began as pilgrimage to the oldest surviving Heartgrove has grown into halls, teachers, and a place where new Valenra learn what they have become.

The Academy is reached the way it was founded, through the willow. A hand laid on the great tree’s bark carries a visitor from the village square into halls that stand within the willow’s keeping, and no one, including those who teach there, offers a fuller account of the mechanics than that. The first Valenra came to Willowdale as pilgrims seeking the stillness of the oldest surviving Heartgrove. Enough of them stayed, and had questions, that the questions eventually acquired classrooms.

High Sage Astrum Ersatra keeps the school as headmaster, an old man with the three pillars of Body, Mind, and Spirit stitched on his robes and an unhurried conviction that every first-year is the most promising student the Academy has ever admitted. Around him the work divides into four halls, where the mentors of the Warden, Channeler, Shaman, and Weaver paths each keep their own room, their own methods, and their own patient argument for why theirs is the sensible way to live with the Aether. Students hear all four out and choose. Until the choice sets, they may change their minds, which the mentors regard as evidence of thought rather than weakness.

The Academy trains no one who does not need it and turns away no one who does. Its trials are practical, its shops sell what a beginner can afford, and its garden is quiet in the way the grove above it is quiet. Villagers regard the whole arrangement with the Elunari’s usual practicality: the school buys bread, the students are polite, and whatever happens inside the tree is the tree’s business.
